Mobile Addiction in Students: A Guide for Parents & Teachers

In the recent years, mobile has become a very common part of daily lives. It is no more a luxury today and is easily accessible. From being used for communication purpose to its increased usage for learning, mobile is now used excessively by the students. This continuous use has left them addicted to mobile leading to distraction and emotional imbalance. Today, it is the responsibility of parents and teachers to help student learn the correct use of mobile.

What Is Mobile Addiction?

Mobile addiction means excessive use of smartphones which is uncontrolled leading to disturbance in normal living. This spoils the relationships, and leads to poor studies and sleep quality. Today, students get access to screen from a small age in the form of online classes, games, and digital homework. But there must be a line drawn between necessity and excess usage. A student might not even know that he/she is addicted until the signs begin to appear.

What Make Students Vulnerable to Mobile Addiction?

The brain of students is in the developing phase especially those parts which help in decision-making and self-control. The mobile games and apps that students play have been designed to trigger dopamine which makes them feel happy. They get rewards, and motivational notifications that keep them using it. Further, reduced outdoor play, academic pressure, less interaction with siblings, and easy internet access make them use it more and more.

How Mobile Addiction Impacts Mental and Emotional Health?

Did you know that students are likely to face anxiety and can go into depression if they use mobile excessively? They are likely to develop a fear of missing out which is not good for their emotional growth. Over usage make them replace emotional connections with virtual validation. This damages them as they are still little children who are in their phase of growing up.

What Are the Physical Health Consequences?

Mobile addiction affects the physical health of children to a large extent. It affects their body in many ways which is not good for their growth. Continuously sitting and using mobile phone causes poor posture, back pain, neck pain and irritation in eyes. It leads to reduction in the physical activity which make students lethargy and obese. Further, it also causes disruption in the sleep cycle leading to a tired and restless body.

How Parents Can Teach Right Use of Mobile at Home?

Parents play an important role in teaching their children what is right for them. One of the best ways of doing so is leading by giving an example. Children learn what they see and when they see their parents using mobile, when necessary, for limited time, they will learn that too.
There should be strict screen time rules at home which must be followed by everyone like no phone usage while eating food, studying, and bedtime. You can help them further by encouraging them to engage more and more in offline activities like playing with friends, engaging in arts and spending time with family. Parents can teach their children the responsible use of mobile phones and how when not done so can impact them negatively.

How Can Teachers Help?

Teachers should engage students in interactive sessions and teach them how to handle boredom positively. At Rawat Public School, we ensure that the students are taught the correct usage of technology. They are continuously educated about the responsible use of mobile and how excessive its use affects the mental health.
In the current times, it is important that children learn to use mobile to a positive extent. This can only be done when parents and teachers work together as a team and support the students in learning what’s best for their growth.
