Today, the world is well connected and this is why classrooms are filled with students from different cultures. It becomes the responsibility of schools to make all of them feel welcome and comfortable. This is why teachers find ways to celebrate the diversity so that the students can grow in a positive environment. They put efforts in creating a learning environment where students can turn into global citizens. 

10 Ways of Celebrating Cultural Diversity in Classrooms

Here are the 10 ways which are followed at Rawat Public School to make students feel valued. 

1. Welcoming Multicultural Environment

We believe in creating a positive environment where students can learn and grow positively. It gives them a sense of belonging and makes them feel safe which is necessary for effective learning. Teachers engage in displaying multilingual maps, pictures, and posters belonging to different cultures. Even small steps like labelling study objects in different languages make them feel acknowledged and respected.

2. Celebrating Global Cultural Holidays

We have a calendar where all the main festivals are marked so that the students can recognize them. We celebrate various festivals such as Eid, Hanukkah, Chinese New Year, and tribal ones by conducting cultural activities comprising of storytelling, and traditional musical performances. This help students in learning and engaging in activities that familiarize them with various festivals. Students are given holidays on major festivals so that they can enjoy them well.

3. Encouraging Students to Share Experiences

One of the best ways of connecting the students and creating harmony between them is by encouraging them to share their personal experiences. This is why we at Rawat Public School promote events which focus on allowing the students to share their stories. These activities not only make the students feel confident but also help in enhancing their communication skills. 4. Using Multicultural Literature/Media

We can teach our students best with the help of books, music and videos as they help them understand better. Including multicultural literature helps in teaching students about different cultures that coexist in this world. There are stories sharing the global experiences which familiarizes students with the beauty of diversity. Films, folk tales, songs, and documentaries from different regions are shared to start discussions regarding identity and acceptance.

5. Integrating Cultural Elements into Classroom Sessions

Our teachers ensure that teaching about cultures is not restricted to special events but is a part of daily teaching. This is made possible by adding something to the everyday classes such as science period can include discussions about global inventors, art lessons may include traditional craft making and Geography classes may be about exploring indigenous communities. These additions help students see it as an important part of the global learning. 

6. Promoting Inclusive Group Work

When students learn together, they learn better and therefore we promote collaborative learning. Groups are formed comprising students with different backgrounds so that they can learn and understand diverse viewpoints. This also helps in ascertaining that none student feels isolated and they have a feeling of belongingness. 

7. Inviting Families/Community Members to Participate

Inviting community members or parents will help students in learning better as they share crafts, traditions, skills, or stories. The elderly are knowledgeable about the traditional culture and can teach a folk song or some special age-old recipes. The community members too can help by sharing their regional art forms and teaching it to the students. These interactions not only acknowledge the background of student but also fills them with pride. 

8. Encouraging Open Dialogue

We believe in letting the students pour their heart out about the struggles that they might have been facing. Not only struggles but also their culture, learnings and what makes it all special. Our teach provide topics or encourage discussion on age-appropriate topics on cultural assumptions, prejudice and stereotypes. There are activities such as debates, and exercises which help students in thinking critically on a given topic and finding innovative solutions.

9. Creating Language Appreciation Activities

Language is an important part of any community and therefore we ensure that activities are conducted to appreciate it. We conduct activities in which we have a new word of the week or a phrase where student get to learning something new about the language they speak. We conduct games, and share bilingual books from which student can learn and explore their language. This not only builds confidence in students but also help them learn better.

10. Celebrating Diversity Through Cultural Projects

When a student performs something, he/she learns better and therefore, we provide cultural projects to engage them. There are different projects comprising poster making, dish making, craft making, and researches which allow students to explore, learn, and create. We also organize cultural fair where students can present their projects and share what they have created.
